Who Are We?

About Warthogs Safari Camp

Warthogs is a family-owned business and is a sister ship to Cameron Harvey Safaris running since 1994.

After some years of hosting 4×4 safaris, we found Kariba was lacking in affordable accommodation. Always up for a challenge, brother and sister team Louisa and Ian Harvey took up the task to provide an original camp, epitomizing their quirky and artistic personalities.

Did you know?

The name “Warthogs” derives from the old bream farmland which the camp was originally built on.

Ultimately Warthogs and Cameron Harvey Safaris are all about individuality. No safari is the same, no stay at Warthogs is the same. We want visitors to enjoy what’s on offer in Kariba and Zimbabwe and be comfortable whilst doing so. With luck, there could be an experience of a lifetime just round the corner, be it hooking into a trophy tigerfish, a close encounter with zebras, a heart-stopping bungee jump, or the morning alarm call of hippos after a night on the river.

Our History

How it all began

After spending many younger years living and holidaying in Southern Africa Ian Harvey left England for a life in Zimbabwe. Cameron Harvey Safaris was registered in 1994, offering individually tailored safaris around Zimbabwe. His sister Louisa (having had the same African background) liked the idea so much resigned from an engineering career in the UK and joined Ian in 1997.

Their safaris often led them to Kariba and Warthogs was born in 1999 out of a need for affordable accommodation in Kariba, away from the traditional hotel or lodge. With tourism disrupted by political turmoil in the following 10 years, Warthogs kept afloat by focusing on being the favorite watering hole for Kariba residents and Harare fishermen.

Warthogs thrived as “the place to be” until being evicted in 2012. In true British style, however, their motto is “never surrender” and Warthogs has been slowly rebuilt over the years at its current fabulous location.

Last year the partnership welcomed Wayne Horsley on board (husband/brother in law) and this year has seen the first fruits of the trio…our new and distinctive en-suite safari facilities. With new birth comes a new branding and Warthogs Bush Camp is now Warthogs Safari Camp. Cameron Harvey Safaris, however, retains its name, mirroring Louisa’s son’s name!
